Positive Employment is currently recruiting for an Environmental Sustainability/Climate Emergency Manager for local government organisation based in Brent.

The successful candidate will be the organisation’s strategic and corporate lead for the climate emergency and environmental sustainability.

Develop and deliver climate emergency programmes, projects and partnerships across the corporate estate and the domestic, business, schools and community sectors in Brent, including joint initiatives with sub-regional, regional and national bodies.

This is a 5 month starting contract with the possibility for extensions. Hybrid working available.

Duties and Responsibilities but not limited to:

  • Develop the organisation’s corporate approach to environmental sustainability and the climate emergency from first principles, devising a borough-wide strategy and corporate plan.
  • Embed environmental sustainability principles in service delivery and operations across the organisation, optimised within existing resources.
  • Provide expert advice to the Lead Member for Environment, other Cabinet Members and Chief Officers on environmental sustainability and climate emergency matters.
  • Devise and deliver effective engagement initiatives across the whole community in Brent, in order to build consensus, educate and involve the public in the changes that will be required to make Brent an environmentally sustainable borough.
  • Help the organisation meet its financial strategy targets, achieving value for money in managing revenue and capital budgets and wherever possible securing external resources for project delivery, managing delegated budgets in accordance with council financial management procedures and instructions including monthly and annual forecasting and growth.
  • Initiate and prepare options appraisals, business cases and plans to enable the organisation to effectively resource and organise itself to meet its commitments on environmental sustainability and the climate emergency.
  • Continually review, monitor and drive improvement in the performance of environmental sustainability and climate emergency initiatives and targets in the Borough Plan and other corporate plans.
  • Ensure that Brent’s climate emergency strategy, policies and initiatives are effectively communicated to key audiences across the borough and to the media.
  • Keep abreast of the implications for Brent of any emerging legislation, government policy or developments in the local community which may impact on the organisation’s design and delivery of its environmental sustainability and climate emergency strategy and programmes.

Personal Requirements:

  • A relevant degree or professional qualification.
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of environmental sustainability issues, including relevant legislation, policy and best practice in an urban setting.
  • Experience of securing and managing complex budgets across capital and revenue, funded by multiple stakeholders, and delivering projects on time and to budget, while being accountable to funders and transparent to the organisation.
  • Previous experience in a similar role.
  • Previous experience of working in local government on the climate action agenda.

Working Hours: 09:00am – 17:00pm, Monday – Friday 

Pay: £39.06 p/h

Please note this role is within the scope of IR35.
