Job Description


The post holder will complete and assess service user care needs, develop, implement and evaluate treatment plans under the guidance of a more senior nurse.

The staff nurse will take charge of the home in the absence of a more senior nurse. The staff nurse will act as a named nurse for specific service users when they are covering and working within the home.

To maintain a high degree of individualized service user centred care being responsible for the assessment, implementation and evaluation of care for service users throughout the ward. This will be achieved by devising care plans/ completing waterlow assessments/Manual handling assessments/ Observation charts and Referrals in-house and interagency forms.

To be responsible and accountable for ensuring care plans are amended as service users care needs dictate and evaluated on a daily basis and when there is change within the treatment plan. Assessment of wound care & pressure area care will be carried out and implemented in line with manual handling guidelines.

To ensure that service users are treated with dignity and respect, to ensure that high quality of care is given.

To personally administer all relevant forms of direct service user care, also to be responsible for the supervision of junior staff on a daily basis within the Guidelines of the Professional code of accountability.

To promote a safe environment within the unit ensuring their awareness of, the home’s policies and procedures, maintain training update in health and safety, promotion of health, infection control, fire, back awareness, cardiac resuscitation and security.

To participate in the development of education programs NVQs and facilitating standards of care to junior staff, carers and service users

To maintain Quality Assurance initiatives by playing an active role with self checks on equipment and attending annual training sessions.

To participate in an annual appraisal with their manager so that an agreed training programme can be developed. This will endeavour to maintain their clinical expertise and giving them the responsibility for their own Personal Development Plan.

To contribute to the quality agenda, including Evidence Based Practice, Audit, Clinical Governance and Clinical Effectiveness.

To maintain a personal high level of clinical and managerial expertise taking responsibility for own personal development including compliance with NMC regulations

To take responsibilities for a team of service users with the support of a more senior nurse

To work on a rota basis including bank holidays and week ends.

To advise service users and carers on health care issues and support them in times of stressful and emotional events which are frequently emotionally demanding to the nurse and demanding on their time.

To be able to communicate effectively with sensitivity when imparting information that could be highly stressful and emotional to service users and relatives

To work in Equalities framework at all times

To assist in maintaining and improving standards of physical, psychological and social care for all service users in the home, complying with the principles of care, as determined by Adult Services and the Care Quality Commission.

To use IT equipment and provide information electronically.

To attend to the security of the building, including the safe-keeping of medication.

 To undertake any other duties consistent with the basic objectives and/or duties of the post.


To provide leadership to more junior staff and promote effective teamwork to meet the needs of service users

To take charge of units in the absence of more senior staff.
To maintain effective levels of communication with the nursing team by verbal handovers at shifts change/medical teams – as required and daily updates on service users’ condition and care needs to Doctors who visit.

To participate in Audits


Comply with all relevant Haringey Council Policies & Procedures in exercising the duties of the role.

Undertake any necessary skills training, Professional Updates/CPD and Mandatory Training as appropriate to the post, in agreement with the Ward Manager.

To participate in Infection Control and Medication audits.

This job outline should be treated flexibly and will be amended as the service requirement alters and/or the need of the post holder develops.


All employees will have an understanding of basic infection control principles and procedures during induction to Haringey Council. This will be supported through mandatory refresher training which is aimed at raising and maintaining awareness of infection control principles.

Staff throughout the organisation will be proactive in promoting and securing the implementation of best practice in the prevention and control of infection during their daily roles within home.

Education / Qualification

RGN RMN or Any relevant qualification

Work / Other Experience

Experience of working with older people, people with disabilities, supervising staff, being responsible for resources

Experience of working in a care home/rehab environment/community setting.

Communication Skills – Verbal and Written:
Ability to write reports, memos and general correspondence, IT skills.
Ability to communicate verbally at all levels.
Knowledge of record keeping requirements of NMC.
Ability to exercise sensitivity and tact in communicating with service users, their families and advocates.

Admin / Organisational Skills:
Ability to demonstrate supervisory skills.

Ability to challenge poor performance.

Ability to organise and prioritise workload for self and staff team and work to deadlines.

Knowledge / Skills:
Ability to assess service users and maintain and monitor care plans and nursing treatment plans.

Demonstrate commitment to equalities in employment and service provision. Understanding of Council Equal Opportunities policy.
